Flipping Me, Flipping You began as an inquiry into the celebri-fication of housing market education, specifically the phenomenon of real estate investing workshops. Advertised with figureheads from cable-TV house flipping shows, these free events promise to reveal “why people, just like you, are making money and having lots of success using our investing strategies, techniques, and systems!” I attended and surreptitiously recorded at these three-hour events. The resulting audio serves as source material for the series, which encompasses video works, a soundscape, performance with The Average Attendee, and never-ending games of picket fences and playing cards, to create an absurdist activation of the self-actualization rhetoric employed in these workshops. Future works exploring the predatory economies of this enterprise may include an influencer-style photo series and a tactical browser extension.
